Home remodeling making a comeback
The U.S. housing market may be ailing, but homeowners increasingly are spending cash fixing up their homes, both in Orange County and across the nation, new data show.
The BuildFax Remodeling Index shows that home remodeling increased 22% in May from the same month a year earlier. The monthly index shows:
The remodeling industry has been a bright spot as consumers look to make upgrades to their current homes rather than purchasing a new residences, said BuildFax research Vice President Joe Emison.
The BuildFax index is based on building permit activity. Building permit data from the Burbank-based Construction Industry Research Board shows that Orange County remodeling is at its highest level in three years. For January through May, the data show:
