The chief economist of the California Association of Realtors says her group is resigned to seeing high-dollar limits on lower-cost conforming loans expire on Oct. 1, resulting in greater financing costs for people buying pricier homes.
Leslie Appleton-Young said Realtors fought to extend the limit, but now it looks like there’s no hope for a last-minute reprieve.
“We’ve been working very hard to see if we could delay it, and it doesn’t seem possible,” Appleton-Young said during an conference call with journalists this week.
During the height of the housing crisis in 2008, Congress raised the limit for loans that could be resold to such entities as Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, thus qualifying for the lower “conforming loan” interest rates.

About 9,000 Palm Beach County property owners did not receive their annual tax bills in the mail this month because of a computer processing problem, Tax Collector Anne Gannon said Tuesday.
Gannon said her office discovered the missing bills while conducting a routine audit of the roughly 705,000 annual property tax bills that should have arrived in mailboxes this month.
The missing bills represent about 1.3 percent of all the office’s tax bills.

The problem affected many property owners who had paid their taxes in quarterly installments, Gannon said.
The office is in the process of printing the missing bills, Gannon said.

There is new hope for struggling homeowners who have lost their jobs.Mike Trailor is director of Arizona’s Housing Department.Trailor said they’ve just kicked-off a new homeowner assistance program, with the help of $36 million in federal funding. The program targets unemployed homeowners, who would get their monthly mortgage paid for up to 24 months, if they qualify.”It’s a bridge to get you from unemployment, to hopefully employment to where you can sustain your home ownership,” said Trailor. However, like many of the recent federal homeowner assistance and loan modification programs, this one has some potential problems.CBS-5 has learned that a homeowner who took out a second mortgage for anything other than purchasing the house isn’t eligible for the unemployment-mortgage assistance program.Trailor said discussions are now under way to make the program’s requirements more flexible.”Whether it’s with a percentage of the purchase price, or money used for medical purposes or home improvement,” said Trailor, “we’re trying to make sure the program serves as many people as possible.”Money to help Arizona’s unemployed homeowners comes from $250 million Arizona was given by the federal government last year, as part of the Hardest Hit Housing Program, which helps homeowners avoid foreclosure.
